Saying goodbye is the most difficult thing in life and we never learn to be good at it.Unknown

This memorial website was created to honor Eric Dean Blackwell, a great man loved dearly by his family and friends.  Eric was born in Upland, California on December 31, 1968 and taken from us on July 26, 2007 at the age of 38.

Eric along with Todd Ivens and Glen May died in an explosion during a cold flow test for Space Ship II's rocket motor in Mojave, CA.  My heart grieves for the loss of my husband, but also grieves alongside those at the test site that day and with the friends, family, and coworkers that miss them.

Eric -

I refuse to believe in “until death do us part.”  You are still very much here with me.  With every season, every adventure, and every new project undertaken – I feel your presence and see your positive influence.  You will never leave my heart and are forever bound to my soul.  You showed everyone such respect, kindness, compassion, and lived every day like it might be your last.  It’s a legacy I hope I can continue.  You are loved and missed – not forgotten, not ever.  Every step is now for both of us.

Love is forever - Kim

With the encouragement of his family and friends, Eric was going to start working towards becoming an engineer to compliment his A&P experience.  He was really excited about it, which was kind of a big deal because Eric really didn't enjoy going to school.

A scholarship has been set up in Eric's name at Cerro Coso Community College for pre-engineering students with an interest in the aviation or aerospace industry.  Students must have a 2.5 GPA or better and attend school 6 units or more.  This is a perpetual scholarship, which means it will be around for quite some time.  All donations are tax deductible.

  1. To donate make checks payable to:  Cerro Coso Community College Foundation
  2. In the memo section write:  Eric Dean Blackwell Memorial Scholarship
  3. Mail or bring to:

Cerro Coso Community College

Attn: Natalie Dorrell

3000 College Heights Blvd.

Ridgecrest, CA 93555

Thank you to those that have donated and made this possible.  With the help of the Scaled Family Fund and donations made by individuals - Eric's scholarship continues to grow.

There is a book dedicated to Eric, Glen, and Todd called "The Lunar Exploration Scrapbook - A Pictorial History of Lunar Vehicles," by Robert Godwin.  It's an interesting book and the dedication was a very touching and thoughtful thing for them to do.

If you're ever in Mojave, California - the memorial plaque that was dedicated on 7/24/08 is on the wall in front of the Voyager restaurant at the airport.  It's just down the road from Scaled Composites.  When you see the huge rocket looking thing - you're there.  If you want to see a picture it's in the Gallery on this site towards the end.  You'll also see a picture of the brand new Rocket Propulsion Test Site flag.  The three gold stars represent Eric, Glen, and Todd.

One of Eric's favorite places in California was Disneyland.  There is now a cement paver with his name on it in his memory.  It's right in front of the entrance to the park.  There's a picture of it in the photo gallery.
